— Studied German language and literature, philosophy, Latin and religious studies at the University of Tübingen (1974-77; 1979-1981) and at the Università degli studi in Florence (1978-1979); during his studies, he was a seminar assistant to Prof. Dr. Hans Mayer (Deutsches Seminar (German Department) at the University of Tübingen) for four semesters. — 1981–1986: Participation as a doctoral student in German studies in the special research area on religious studies ‘Religionsgeschichte Deutschlands im 19. und 20. Jhdt.
